Citizens Frustrated by Bangor Drug War

There have been a few arrests recently in Bangor on cocaine charges. The most recent was by the Bangor Police Special Response Team with two raids on Ohio Street. Four arrests resulted for trafficking in that one. But when the same phrases are repeated over and over again in the media -- “significant quantities of cocaine” and “Dominican drug trafficking organization” the citizenry starts to get a little upset.

No one is saying the DEA and the MDEA shouldn’t be out there getting the bad guys. The question is, “Why is there a never ending supply of bad guys in Bangor?”

Comments posted on the Bangor Daily News website reflect this frustration:
”Why are there so many drugs in Bangor? What are we doing wrong? Do we have an activist police department or do we need one? This is getting to be a daily occurrence which gives Bangor and the surrounding area a black eye. Are we just a drug friendly destination?”

The raids also seem to be getting more intense and more like combat operations. In the example above, the street was closed off and a fire truck was on scene. This was apparently because police used tear gas and were worried about a possible fire.

Another commenter says, ” uhhhh, 3 methadone clinics maybe? Just a guess but when you invite over 1,700 drug addicts into your town that just might lend itself to drug activity. I might be way off, just a humble observation.”

And so it goes. On the upside, Bangor residents care about what’s happening. That’s probably more than can be said for other cities and bad neighborhoods. It seems the Ohio Street area in question is well known as a place where the sleazy bars and even sleazier drug dealers hang out.
